Planning for Career Success - International Graduate Student Workshop Series (Feb 27 to Apr 2) - Tuesdays 1PM to 3:00PM

This 6-week interactive workshop series supports Masters and Ph.D. students who intend to work in Canada during their studies and/or after graduation.  Students will develop career management competencies, including knowledge of Canadian work culture, career planning and job search strategies, and resumé writing and interview skills.  

Each session is 2 hours in length, running Tuesdays between February 27 to April 02 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM.  Attendance is required for the full length of all sessions. Space is limited.  Please register in advance.

The dates and agenda for the sessions are listed below.  

Tuesday - February 27 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Introduction to Working in Canada
  • Understanding employment vocabulary /terminology
  • Introduction to Career Management
  • Introduction to work culture and employer expectations
Tuesday - March 05 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Career Planning: Academia & Beyond
  • Identifying your work interests and values
  • Exploring Labour Market Information and employment alternatives to academia   
  • Assessing skills and strengths to identify occupational fit
Tuesday - March 12 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Job Search Strategies
  • How to search for work in the Visible and Hidden Job Markets
  • Matching your skills to industry and identifying employers
  • Employer networking, calling cards, and work proposals
Tuesday - March 19 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Resumé / CV & Cover Letter 
  • Resumé or CV?  Document styles, components, and formatting
  • Understanding employer needs and effectively highlighting your competencies
  • How to write an effective cover letter
Tuesday - March 26 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Interviews: Marketing Yourself for Success 
  • Anticipating questions and preparing for an interview
  • Tips for responding to traditional, hypothetical and behavioural descriptive questions
  • Interview follow-up practices 
Tuesday - April 02 - 1:00 to 3:00pm - Succeeding in the Canadian Workplace
  • Canadian workplace culture and etiquette   
  • Introduction to employment standards
  • Your first 30 days on the job: personal management and positive practices

Space is limited.   Please register in advance. 

We encourage all to attend and participate as fully as possible given access to technology.

NOTE: This workshop will be held through video conferencing.  All registered students will be contacted by the facilitator via email with video conferencing instructions.
