This 6-session interactive virtual workshop series supports undergraduate students who intend to work in Canada during their studies and/or after graduation. Students will develop career management competencies, including knowledge of Canadian work culture, career planning and job search strategies, and resumé writing and interview skills. Participants must attend all sessions. The series is recommended for all undergraduate international students and we especially encourage 1st and 2nd-year students to take part!
Each session is 2 hours in length. Attendance is required for the full length of all sessions!
The dates and itinerary for the series are listed below:
Session 1: Thursday, September 29 - 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM - Introduction to Working in Canada
- Understanding employment vocabulary /terminology
- Introduction to Career Management
- Introduction to work culture and employer expectations
Session 2: Thursday, October 6 - 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM - Career Planning: Your Career Pathway & Steps to Success
- Identifying your work interests and values
- Exploring Labour Market Information
- Creating a success plan with emphasis on industry-focused skill building
Session 3: Thursday, October 13 - 1:30 PM- 3:30 PM- Job Search Strategies
- How to search for work in the Visible and Hidden Job Markets
- How to identify potential employers in your industry of interest
- Professional communication and networking
Session 4: Thursday, October 20 - 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM - Resume / Cover Letter
- Resume components, formatting, styles
- Understanding employer needs and effectively highlighting your competencies
- How to write an effective cover letter
- Tailoring your resume or CV to industry and individual employers
Session 5: Thursday, October 27 - 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM - Interviews: Marketing Yourself for Success
- Anticipating questions and preparing for an interview
- Tips for responding to traditional, hypothetical and behavioral-descriptive interview questions
- Interview follow-up practices
Session 6: Thursday, November 3 - 1:30 PM- 3:30 PM- Succeeding in the Canadian Workplace
- Canadian workplace culture & etiquette
- Introduction to employment standards
- Your first 30 days on the job: personal management and positive practices
